you very much. that's it for forbes on fox. thank you all for watching, have a spectacular new year, keep it right here, the number one business block continues with lauren simonetti and cashin' in. . lauren: as president trump wraps up his first year in office, we're looking back at his administration's biggest accomplishments. and what the president needs to do in 2018 to keep our economy booming. hi, everybody, i'm lauren simonetti, welcome to cashin' in. our crew this week, gina, tracy and david mercer, hey, guys. >> hey, lauren. lauren: gary, let's start with you. >> happy new year. lauren: yeah, happy new year. the president's biggest accomplishments in 2017, what do you think they are, gary? >> well, look, there's a lot the rhetoric on both sides. the only thing i care about is outcome. the stock market has soared, the economy accelerated,
8:31 am
unemployment is down at 4%. hispanic and black unemployment are at lows going back many, many years. you have 1.5 trillion dollars being kept in the economy over the next ten years because of a tax bill, which, by the way, 500,000 people are now getting 500 million dollars because of it and then let's throw in the mandate, that stupid, silly mandate that hurt the people that make $50,000 or less most. that's going by the wayside. and i'm a happy camper with all of this and i hope it continues. my one big worry, debt and deficits foisted on the public the last 20 years, they may come home to roost one day. lauren: so the economy overall is trump's biggest accomplishment in 2017 says gary. what say you, david? >> i say that's an inherited economy. nothing to do with donald trump. lauren: whoa. >> and that being, you know, the one-- >> nothing? >> well, the one accomplishment they will speak to is the tax cut that was just passed.
8:32 am
that, i don't think, makes for a great presidency, and won't make america great again. just think about it, on average, we're going to have one major piece of legislation per year by this president so at the end of this we're going to be saying he was a great president with four pieces of legislation? come on, i don't think so. lauren: all right, he chipped away at obamacare with this tax reform win in 2017. gina, i'm also thinking deregulation, that certainly helps the economy, for instance. what else do you see as big winners for the president this year? >> yeah, it's impossible to pick because there's honestly so much. to call it one piece of legislation is really just to highlight the fact that the democrats have been wholly uncooperative with anything to boost our economy and tax reform. the president has done things without them like deleg ration like you mentioned. i love that because that's
8:33 am
freedom. and you can't take for granted decimating isis, that's so we can sleep at night and so many things that have gone unheralded as well, human trafficking and being called to a halt and so many things and i forsee this president continuing to negotiate our best deals, domestically and internationally, as he's done so far. lauren: tracy, what do you think is the big egest thing is. >> i'll agree the economy. wall street, our 401(k)'s, that's what a lot of people care about. we're looking at the markets and the dow up 25% year to date and nasdaq up 29%, and these are big numbers, and i think this has been a big accomplishment to carry through 2017. of course, a lot of the success did start in late 2016. so, it's been a good year with the economy. lauren: where do you see us going? what does the president need to work on for 2018?
8:34 am
gary, i'm going to bring it back to you. we can see an infrastructure plan, possibly. you hope that gets bipartisan support. what do you see being the priority for 2018? >> well, for me, you have to go after entitlements because that's where the biggar beg-- big gargantuan if they go after that, i'm fine with infrastructure as long as it's paid for correctly. let's do a private-public partnership, something like that. i think immigration reform. presidents have been promising that for the last 30 years and nothing has ever been done. we need to do that. and welfare reform, you just can't continue to dole out a trillion dollars a year to welfa welfare. what we need to do is get people off of welfare and into work fare and i think that's been
8:35 am
happening. lauren: and paul ryan might be more inclined to deal with infrastructure. i want to ask you about immigration reform. do you see that president trump, this is one. things he campaigned on. do you see him saying to congress, here is the ultimatum. you want to deal with daca on the dreamers here raised in the united states you want to deal on them. fund my border wall, show the money. do you think he'll do that. >> the border wall and i don't think he'll ignore chain migration, that's become a massive problem in our country ap it's sort of a shady way to continue to import people who get here illegally and so, i think that he'll confront both of those things if he's going to listen to them on the whole daca situation. it will be interesting to see where the base comes down on that, but i think that he will take on this wall issue. i believe that 100% because so far he's been a man of his weird clear down to things like putting the capital back in jeruselem. i don't see how he wouldn't take
8:36 am
that issue on. i forsee that. lauren: the estimated cost of that wall is 22 billion dollars. david, let me bring you in here, we've had several terrorist attacks in this country this year, and overseas. the one i'm thinking of, the most recent, the subway bomber here in new york city. he was the nephew of an american citizen that was able to come here because of our chain immigration system. how do you think the president tackles that in 2018? >> well, he'll probably stick to his guns in halting the immigration or restricting the immigration of those coming from countries that he identified, which we might just, as a footnote, mention that those states, or those countries haven't had anybody here that has committed a terrorist attack, and saudi and others that have had citizens from their countries commit attacks, are not on that muslim ban list.
8:37 am
so he might want to adjust his immigration policies in order to target those that have a history of having people here in the states, posing a threat to our security, and individuals around the country. lauren: but tracy, david is mentioning the travel ban. at last check, controversial, yes, but some version still stands. >> only some version. >> that's been something that's been ongoing, something that the administration has been struggling to really tackle. i don't know if that's going to get done in 2018. i believe it needs to, but it's been just too difficult, i think. going back to, i think the administration needs to get on infrastructure. that's what i think is one of the priorities for 2018. i think it needs to get done earlier rather than later with the mid term elections coming up. i can the later they wait, the harder it will be and i think it can be something that can be done with bipartisanship.
8:38 am
lauren: but don't pay for the infrastructure spending, fixing the airports and the roads by raising my gas taxings. that's not going to fly, in my opinion in an election year, we have the mid terms next year. gina, is there anything else? if you could advise the president, if you were sitting next to him, what would you say? president trump, you need to do this in 2018, what would that be? >> tweet more. lauren: tweet more? >> with the-- >> tweet more? >> that's how he goes around the traditional establishment apparatus media and i think that it's important and i also think psychologically it's important for him to have the rallies and where he listens to the pulse of american people. i don't want him ever to lose touch with the american people pan and to stop being their voice. i think that's important. >> just set the conditions for the people to thrive. it's not government that creates the success of this country,
8:39 am
it's the hard-working men and women of this country that gets the job done. you keep doing that, things are going to be just fine going forward. >> i amen. >> and try to be a little more forthright with the american people and try a little more honesty. >> tracy, the final word. >> i'm going to say tweet maybe a little best. >> i agree. >> i understand that's what he likes to do, but i think that some things get lost in the message there. i think we need to work on communication just a little bit more. lauren: coming up, here we go again. president obama, appearing to criticize president trump. that's nothing new, but it's where he did it that's fueling quite a fierce debate. a claim with usaa to replace that spoiled food. and we really appreciated that we're the webber family and we are usaa members for life.

>> the leadership has to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the internet. the dangers of the internet is that people can have entirely different realities. they can be just cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases. and it's harder to be as obnoxious and cruel in person as people can be anonymously on the internet. lauren: he's got a point, however, that's former president trump taking a lot so hidden dig at president trump, but it's not what he said, but where it was heard that is causing the most outrage. gina, i'll begin with you.
8:43 am
this was an interview with prince harry overseas. and should a former president criticize a current president? >> i think it's a good question to ask. i don't think he should have to check his first amendment card, but it wasn't a classy thing to do especially overseas. lauren: but tracy, president obama didn't name president trump specifically, so, is it a dig? >> you know, i could see why it would be taking a dig, but i don't think it was. i don't think it was an outright dig against president trump. he said all of us in leadership. and i think he included himself in that, all of us in leadership. so, i don't-- i personally did not see anything wrong with it. lauren: did you think it was a dig, gary? >> yes. look, there have been only 44 different presidents, it's a small club. this should be easy, but it does go both ways. a sitting president should also not be putting down a past president and that's been going on also. let this guy run the country,
8:44 am
you're done, over, if you want to do other things in government. god bless you. if you want to do a pac, god bless you, but get away from putting him down at this point in time. lauren: what do you say, david? >> i would say what you say, there is no mention of trump there. secondly, it was good advice to leaders in corporations, in colleges, or anywhere else, thirdly, it's a worldwide web so what any president, former or otherwise, said is going to end up on the worldwide web and i would add to the good advice that you may want to think and check your facts before you do tweet, so that you're not giving erroneous or false information, which we've seen this president often do. lauren: a lot of people have given false information, it's one. perils of the internet. >>, but we're talking about the president today so i thought we'd mention that. lauren: david, follow-up for you. >> sure. lauren: when you hear in that sound, in that interview from president obama, cocoon, you know, reinforces our own biases.
8:45 am
what does that signify to you? what do you think he's really talking about? >> i think it signifies what we see in mainstream media, be it those fox news viewers or msnbc viewers, or abc news, people want to hear the news from their sources in particular, and you have cocoons within the worldwide web, be it on twitter or facebook, and it's only a mirror of what we see in cable tv or network tv and media in general. lauren: gina, i'll let you respond to that. >> yeah, i think it's a good challenge, actually, to say, hey, get outside your bubble and listen to all opinions and come up with your own. but i also think it kind of insults the american people to say that they live in cocoons. because i think the american people in the last election showed they were willing to listen to all sides and make a decision and why they elected this president. lauren: that's a really-- go ahead, gary. >> the american people are a lot smarter than professor obama
8:46 am
thinks. >> or the g.o.p. thinks, or the g.o.p. >> excuse me, we all have our opinions. we all get to voice our opinions, in any way, shape or form, based on what we see on a daily basis. i don't need somebody telling us what to thinken or do, i've go the news for you, as i said earlier in the segment i think we're smarter than them in washington d.c. and they've been taking us for granted for a very long time. lauren: so the code of silence basically has been broken, tracy, right? we saw it in the moment when harry met barry, the code of silence is broken. where do we go from here? >> do we continue the code of silence and keep that up or do we, as we go with free speech, do we speak what we want. lauren: better question. when president trump is former president trump, whenever that is, do you think he's going to break the code of silence that arguably has already been broken? >> no, he broke it before he
8:47 am
became president. come on. [laughter] >> he's breaking it every day. no, i don't think it will be necessary because i think that free market economics is going to work out so well that i see another free market economically based president after president trump serves his eight years, i don't think there will be reason to criticize. lauren: another businessman in the oval office. thanks, guys. trouble could be brewing for 2018. china being accused of sneaking around and illegally selling oil to north korea. what it could mean for peace in 2018. vo: gopi's found a way to keep her receipts tidy,

>> coming up, a new report says that china is selling oil to north korea. if this is true, will it kill any chance for peace in the new year.

year's eve bash in times square in the final hours. organizers putting on finishing touches, testing the confetti. and millions of people expected to be on hand and brave the cold tomorrow night. i'm leland vittert. i'll see you at the top of the hour with gillian turner. now back to cashin' in. lauren: president trump ticked off as pictures allegedly show chinese ships selling oil to north korea. how can we deal with north korea if we can't trust china? gary, what do you think? >> you know, i have to tell you, china is sitting right there west of north korea and japan is south korea, just south. one would think in their best interests they would put the screws to north korea. they are 80% of the economy so
8:53 am
it's weird to see they're acting against themselves. i don't know what to do at this point. i would think we'd have some leverage because they have leverage, but it seems to me, they want to keep doing what they're doing. i don't know what the answer is except there's going to be some sort of trade war and that's not going to be good for anybody. lauren: yeah, david, it's very tricky. china denies they're violating the u.n. resolution and they're violating sanctions, nonetheless, you have instances of them delivering oil via ships to north korea. do you enforce sanctions on china? >> i doubt it, but first, i would say is rather than tweeting and condemning china as the president is doing, based on one news report, he might want to rely on his intelligence agencies and our intelligence apparatus to verify, if you're going to go ahead and continue trusting china. secondly, you know, look, we're reminded that the president's doctrine of america first, he used that to encourage other
8:54 am
countries to do the same. china first, for example. so, i think we might have a situation here where his doctrine may run in conflict to the goals he's seeking to achieve, which is unity of countries in the sanctions against north korea. lauren: yeah, but gina, this is what trump is good at, negotiating. using his will, his might, to get someone to do what they don't want to do. is it not working with china? >> oh, i think the president knows exactly what he's doing. we know that he's always playing chess while the rest of the world is playing checkers and his america first policy is only catching up with the rest of the world, whose presidents have always put their countries first. it's only our last president that put us in the position of leading from behind. so, i think he knows the psychology behind the bluffs and
8:55 am
deception and nobody is going to blame him when we see actions after consistent violations of our agreements with countries like china. so, we'll see what he does, but i guarantee that he's on it. >> to gina's point the getting china to do something problem has been ignored for years by multiple administrations. >> i think at this point china is a little more afraid of north korea than the u.s. maybe the president says he's soft working with them. maybe we need a little more trade friendly approach? i don't know at this point because he said in the new york times interview if they don't help with north korea, i do what i want to do. what does that mean, exactly, where do we go from here? >> what is the tipping point? when is the military option executed? we do not know. coming up, the one investment in 2018 that may make you some serious green.

>> welcome back. it's time for fox on the spot. gina, we begin with you. >> in a year that traditionally is for the party out of power, they will have converts. the prove is everywhere that the free market works. traditional values are tried and true for a reason and i think the winning will continue and drain even some of the worst swamp monsters. lauren: tracy. >> big stories for 2018, i think a russia probe, what's going on and when will this wrap up?
8:59 am
mid term elections and watch that and going off topic, prince harry and meghan markle getting married, who doesn't love a good love story. lauren: and david. >> all time corporate profits and the growth is at 3%. i think, however, we're going to see a course correction of 10% dip in the market to reflect steady economic conditions, not dynamic conditions. lauren: gary? >> fox news alert on david, i think he's actually right, but that's because we're up 6600 points since the election. as far as mine, i think the metals and mining are going to continue to commodity move. i'm expecting 15% and go look at xme and exchange traded fund for that. lauren: oil and gold looking good at the end of the year. thank you and thank you to our cashin' in crew for the rest of the week. that's it for the cost of freedom business block.
